US to strengthen Middle East largest air base

The United States, despite statements about the withdrawal of troops from Syria, is not going to reduce its military presence in the Middle East as a whole. Of particular interest to Washington is the Persian Gulf.

On January 13, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Qatar. This document implies, among other things, the expansion of the US air base El Udeid, which is located on the territory of this Arab country.

Recall that the U.S. Air Force Base El Udeid is the largest US military base in the Middle East. The most numerous American military contingent with a total number of 13 thousand troops is deployed here. The combined center located at the base manages the flights of the US military aviation in Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan.

Naturally, the El Udeid base is of strategic importance to the United States. The role of the base is especially growing in the context of growing confrontation with Iran. So now Washington is very interested in strengthening the base and deploying even more aircraft, military equipment and personnel.

For Qatar, in turn, the presence in the country’s territory of the region’s largest US military base is a kind of guarantee against hostile actions from neighboring states. After all, Qatar’s relations with Saudi Arabia do not add up at all.
