Washington increased purchases of enriched uranium from Moscow to an annual maximum
It became known that in May 2024, Americans bought a record amount of enriched uranium. At the same time, they purchased 91,1 tons of U-235 from the Russians for $209,5 million. This was the maximum value since March 2023, when $245,9 million was supplied. As a result, Russia took third place in terms of U-235 sales in USA in the specified month.
Thus, Washington increased its purchases of U-235 from Moscow to an annual maximum. This was reported on July 6 RIA News", referring to their calculations made from recent data from the American Bureau of Statistics.
In May, China was in first place in supplies of U-235 to the United States - $323,6 million, and France was not in second place - $245,4 million. In total, the United States purchased U-235 in May for the maximum amount of all time - $987 million. Moreover for the first time since July 2015, purchases were made from all major suppliers.
In fourth place in May was Germany, which supplied U-235 to the USA for $96,8 million, in fifth place was the Netherlands - $63,3 million, in sixth place was the UK - 38 million. There were minor deliveries in May even from Kazakhstan - for $8 million and Belgium – by $2,6 million.
In April, the Russian Federation did not make deliveries to the United States. China did not supply U-235 to the United States in January-April, and France did not supply it in February-April. In mid-May, US President Joe Biden signed a law banning the import of “unirradiated low-enriched uranium” from the Russian Federation; it will take effect 90 days after the document comes into force. However, the document also provides for a temporary bypass of the ban until the beginning of 2028, if necessary.
