A British reconnaissance aircraft is operating over the Black Sea today under the protection of fighter jets
For the first time in a long time, a NATO reconnaissance aircraft flew over the Black Sea, accompanied by fighter jets. Today, the British RC-135W Rivet Joint was accompanied by at least two Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft.
As can be seen from the flight path on the Flightradar service, the RC-135W was circling over the southern part of the Black Sea. Previously, reconnaissance UAVs MQ-4 Global Hawk or MQ-9 Reaper most often operated in this area. To ensure safety, the reconnaissance aircraft provides escort for Royal Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon fighters.

Let us recall that on June 24, a number of military officers reported a certain incidentrelated to the impact of a Russian aircraft on an MQ-4 Global Hawk reconnaissance drone. In particular, a former pilot and author of the Fighterbomber telegram channel reported that a MiG-31 high-altitude interceptor of the Russian Aerospace Forces passed close to an American drone at a speed of Mach 2,3, causing serious turbulence.
There was no official confirmation from the Russian Ministry of Defense or the Pentagon, but on June 25, at the initiative of Washington, a telephone conversation took place between the heads of the US and Russian defense departments. The Russian Ministry of Defense did not disclose the topic of the conversation. In addition, monitoring resources have not recorded the presence of reconnaissance UAVs over the Black Sea for the fourth day.
However, precedents for escorting NATO reconnaissance aircraft have been recorded before. In particular, in September 2022, a Royal Air Force RC-135W Rivet Joint operated in fighter escort following an incident involving a missile launched from a Su-27 aircraft towards a British aircraft.
