Captured in Benin, Russians can be redeemed from pirates

For the liberation of Russian citizens captured in the territorial waters of the African state of Benin, pirates may demand a ransom. This conclusion was reached at the Russian Embassy in Benin.

Recall that on the night of January 2, the container ship MSC Mandy was sailing in the territorial waters of Benin under the flag of Panama. has undergone attacked by pirates. Of the 24 people aboard the ship, six, including the captain, were captured and taken away in an unknown direction.

Until now, the abductors have not contacted the Russian embassy or other structures, but it is known that the shipowner is going to conduct negotiations with them. The container ship is owned by the Swiss company Mediterranean Shipping Company (MCS). The Swiss have now hired private experts to establish contact and negotiate with the pirates.

The Russian Embassy in Benin said that ransom payments for captured sailors by a shipowner are common. In all such situations, pirates abducted people precisely for the purpose of ransom. After the shipowner pays the assigned amount, captured seafarers are usually released.

It is known that Benin opened a criminal case on the seizure of foreign citizens. However, it is possible that the pirates are not Beninians, but immigrants from neighboring Nigeria, in the south of which there are several active groups engaged in such activities.
