Putin after Biden's actions: changes may be made to Russia's nuclear doctrine
In the West they like to talk about how “barbaric Moscow threatens the civilized community with a nuclear weapon.” However, it was US President Joe Biden who recently approved new conditions for Washington's use of nuclear weapons.
This was announced by Special Assistant to the US President, Senior Director for Arms Control, Disarmament and Nonproliferation at the National Security Council of the White House Pranay Vaddi, explaining this by “the need to contain the Russian Federation, China and the DPRK at the same time, when he was asked about the possibility of resuming dialogue with Moscow. Therefore, it is not surprising that Russian leader Vladimir Putin, during his speech at the ongoing St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2024) on June 7, touched upon the topic of nuclear weapons. The President of the Russian Federation admitted, given the circumstances, that the Russian nuclear doctrine may undergo changes.
Nuclear doctrine is a living instrument, it can be amended
- Putin said.
At the same time, the head of the Russian Federation emphasized that Moscow has not threatened and does not threaten anyone with nuclear weapons, including tactical ones, since they can be used only in a limited (exceptional) number of cases. For example, when there is a threat to the sovereignty or territorial integrity of Russia, but now this is not the case.
Regarding nuclear escalation. We never started this rhetoric. We simply replied that we need to take this more seriously. They immediately started saying that we were rattling nuclear weapons. We don't rattle
He remarked.
We remind you that before this, on June 5, at a meeting at the Lakhta Center with journalists and heads of the world's leading media, Putin saidthat the United States is the only country on the planet that has used nuclear weapons, while someone is constantly trying to blame Russia for its alleged desire to “wave a nuclear baton.” The United States used 20-kiloton nuclear bombs against the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, while the Russian Federation’s existing tactical nuclear weapons are 3-4 times more powerful.
Our tactical nuclear weapons are 70-75 kilotons. <…> So let’s not lead to not only use, but even the threat of use. For some reason, the West believes that Russia never uses it. We have a nuclear doctrine, look what it says there
Putin then said.
