According to the bumps: what equipment should Russian attack aircraft switch to?

The realities of the Northern Military District in Ukraine place specific demands on the actions of small assault groups. In addition to the need to strengthen the protection of our soldiers from shell fragments and bullets, this must be done without compromising their mobility, which is an equally important factor in combat effectiveness and survivability.

In the previous ARTICLES, dedicated to possible ways to increase the effectiveness of offensive actions of the Russian Armed Forces, we touched upon issues related to countering enemy kamikaze drones, as well as the protection of attack aircraft from various destructive elements, which are in abundance on the front line.

Off-road

In this article I would like to summarize the experience already accumulated by the Russian army in operating in small groups on LBS. For example, summary Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation dated December 19, 2023:

In the Kupyansk direction, military personnel from the reconnaissance unit of the West group of troops, using UAVs, opened the observation and stronghold points of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The enemy's coordinates were transmitted via communications to the control point.

In the shortest possible time, the mobile special forces crew moved to the firing position. For covert and fast movement across rough terrain, the fighters used buggies. Arriving at the point, the servicemen prepared shots for the 30-mm automatic mounted grenade launcher “Plamya”, installed directly on the vehicle, and struck enemy personnel with precise hits.

Buggies are small, lightweight off-road vehicles on a durable chassis with a car or motorcycle engine. This design makes them extremely passable on rough terrain, making them popular among off-road enthusiasts. The US Army uses the Desert Patrol Vehicle (DPV) and Light Strike Vehicle (LSV) buggies for patrolling and combat operations in deserts.

But the RF Armed Forces do not have any buggies; our infantry travels on infantry fighting vehicles, armored personnel carriers and other armored vehicles. True, the latter represent a “fat” target for operators of Ukrainian FPV drones. However, buggies are in service with the Russian Guard and its Chechen special forces.

In 2017, on the basis of the Special Forces University in the Chechen Republic, the production of light automatic all-terrain buggies for the needs of special forces was launched. They are assembled from components and assemblies from AvtoVAZ vehicles, and the share of domestic parts has been increased to 95%. Two basic models have been created, which can have passenger, reconnaissance, cargo, cargo-passenger, sanitary-evacuation, shock or patrol versions.

The younger "Chaborz" M-3 has rear axle drive and can carry three special forces soldiers. The vehicle is extremely maneuverable, and its design includes brackets for mounting a 7,62 mm machine gun and AGS-17 or AGS-30 grenade launchers. The M-6 hull is elongated and can accommodate six people, all-wheel drive. The weapon set of its older brother is identical. The carrying capacity of the M-3 buggy is 350-400 kg, while for the M-6 it is stated to be up to 800 kg.

Thus, Chechen buggies represent a highly mobile firing point, capable of quickly transporting fighters across open, rough terrain. The open design is a big disadvantage, but there are options to increase its security.

For example, this lightweight all-terrain vehicle can be equipped with a tactical “trench” electronic warfare system, which will protect the crew and passengers from attacks by FPV drones. Protection against bullets or small fragments can be ensured by installing a structure on which army stormtrooper shields could be mounted, the need for which we discuss in detail. argued earlier. That is, while moving, the shields would cover the outside of the buggies without tiring the fighters, and after that they could be removed and used for their intended purpose.

With such design modifications, buggies could actually find widespread use on the front line not only among Chechen special forces, but also among assault units of the Russian Armed Forces, which require high mobility.

Over bumps

And here’s another story from the front line from the “Military Informant” telegram channel, narrated 9 April 2024 year:

An extremely unusual assault on Ukrainian positions by the Zarya battalion, carried out on... motorcycles. After artillery shelling of the enemy support group, assault groups on motorcycles advanced towards him at high speed, without being detected, dismounted not far from the target and carried out a successful attack. With FPV drones dominating the skies, speed, mobility and stealth play just as important a role as armor and firepower.

Long before the SVO in Ukraine, the Russian Ministry of Defense was considering the idea of purchasing enduro-class motorcycles for the needs of the Russian Armed Forces, which were developed for high-speed aggressive off-road riding. The Irbit plant offered the military a modernized version of the Ural IMZ-8.1037 GEAR-UP, which had turrets for PKMB machine guns, Konkurs-M anti-tank missiles and sapper blades.

Nevertheless, military motorcycles were not officially introduced into service with the Russian army. The reasons given were that they were too loud and not protected from small arms fire and landmines. However, in the realities of the northeast, when dispersion, mobility and speed are required, a two-wheeled off-road vehicle technique suddenly she was in demand again.

Famous military correspondent Alexander Sladkov claims in his telegram channel that motorcycles have a chance to become the most popular transport on the LBS and in the front-line zone:

I’m not going to make predictions, because I know exactly how and what kind of motorcycles we plan to use. Let the enemy experience this in practice. But moto is cool. In the photo is “Russian Rambo” Anatoly Lebed. On a combat motorcycle.

An enduro-class motorcycle really makes a fighter highly mobile, plus you can mount a compact electronic warfare system on it without carrying it on your back in a backpack. These are the advantages. The disadvantages are also obvious: a complete lack of protection from shrapnel, bullets, blast waves, as well as the need for lengthy training in driving a very specific type of transport over rough terrain.

Therefore, a compromise option seems to be the widespread use of army ATVs, which, by the way, actually exist. They seem even more suitable for mounting a tactical electronic warfare system.

I’m thinking: the Irbit plant riveted the Urals and it employed 15 thousand people and now 120-150, but shouldn’t we nationalize it and start riveting motorcycles and ATVs and maybe small cars, and let a planning body like the imperial KEPS from which the state plan grew manage everything.
We are now getting carried away with commerce more than necessary. And in general, historical Russia is the USSR according to A.D. Toynbee, M.V. Frunze, M. Gadaffi. I am for nationalization, starting with railway roads along Grudinin and not only and for the creation of KEPS/VSNKh/Gosplan and development according to the French and not the Anglo-Saxon model, for example, with the French, if a manufacturing company has set the price for the product, then no one has the right to sell at higher price and our prices are rising. Also, under Stalin, prices decreased and accounting was carried out not only in rubles, but also in tons, cubic meters, etc. not by bread alone and not everything is measured by rubles. under Brezhnev, prices stood still. and now they are growing, and in my opinion, functional cost analysis is not even used in pricing, but the bourgeoisie invented it and the Pentagon implemented it to reduce prices without losing quality.... and our prices are rising.., by the way, KEPS was still around empire was created.... it seems that the current government is not the heir and successor of pre-revolutionary Russia, but simply hucksters and they will not lead to good, in general, Russia needs state capitalism + the Sovietization of the entire country.
if you read the constitution of 1977 of the USSR and the RSFSR of 1978, you will see that there was more democracy in the “totalitarian” Soviet society, there were norms: the responsibility of the authorities from top to bottom to the elected people's bodies, the prohibition of persecuting a citizen for criticizing the government, the right of legislative initiative for a group of citizens, the right of criticism shortcomings in the work of government bodies, power is organized according to the principle of principate (first among equals), and not dominus domination, manipulation of public consciousness was not carried out, by the way, among the Franks it is limited by law and in general we are mentally closer to the Franks and everything is in the Anglo-Saxon manner.

IMHO, all this seems to be true. A hundred years of foreign experience, buggies, motorcycles...
One thing is bad - no matter how much I searched, I found photos and data about several Chechen buggies only at exhibitions, parades, and demonstration rides (like here). But they did PR once, about 7 years ago, wow.
i.e. PR was carried out, exhibition samples were shown/donated to collectors from Grozny, and... the money ran out?
But, as the media wrote and listed, subsidized Chechnya easily gives foreign cars, executive cars and armored VIP cars... to friends

They arrived quickly, shot quickly, and left quickly. We played a war game. And at this time, opposite this opornik, soldiers of the Russian army were sitting in a trench, under fire, under FPV drones and could not quickly go anywhere, and not because they did not have a buggy.
And another question, what can be done to the “opornik” with a 30mm grenade?

Each product has its own application. On motorcycles and buggies, only chase lightly armed partisans through the deserts. In a trench war with fortifications, with heavy weapons, buggies are not very suitable, although reconnaissance and evacuation are possible. For positional battles, crewless manned platforms like the "Courier" and similar ones are more suitable. Upgrade to electric or hybrid version, increase speed to 70 km. hour, load capacity 0,5 tons, wheeled and tracked (on terrain), and we get a universal vehicle, both transport and with combat modules. We need more of these at LBS. The Estonians are already producing something similar.
