Ukraine seeks salvation in space

2
Ukraine continues to delight the world with unimaginable ideas and projects. So, the State Space Agency of Ukraine recently turned to the Australian authorities with an interesting proposal - to build a cosmodrome on the distant continent for the needs of Ukrainian cosmonautics. This was officially announced by the Ambassador of Ukraine to Australia Mykola Kulinich.

The Ukrainian diplomat said that the space agency’s delegation is currently preparing to travel to Australia to discuss the project in more detail on the spot. In Kiev, it is believed that if Australia provides Ukraine with a platform for the construction of a cosmodrome, then launches of Ukrainian spacecraft may begin even tomorrow.

From Australia, Ukrainians need 5-7 thousand square kilometers of land, on which the spaceport should be equipped. The ambassador believes that the construction of a spaceport in the deserted northwest of Australia, next to the Royal Air Force Base in Derby, would be an ideal option. The cost of preliminary work to identify all the opportunities and obstacles will cost $ 500 thousand. For the preparation of technical The documentation will take two years. During this time, according to Ukrainian policy, the construction of the cosmodrome will be prepared.

In fact, Ukraine did receive a good space “inheritance” from the USSR. The fact is that more than 130 Ukrainian enterprises served the Soviet rocket and space industry. But when Ukraine gained independence and proclaimed its nuclear-free status, the enterprises of the complex were redesigned to produce civilian products. Nevertheless, Ukraine did not refuse from civilian space exploration projects and throughout the 1990s and 2000s implemented a number of projects, including in cooperation with Russia.

When a coup took place in Ukraine in 2014, space cooperation with Russia for obvious reasons was curtailed. Instead, Ukraine has proclaimed a course for cooperation in aerospace with the European Union. True, European countries were far from enthusiastic about such a decision, since nobody would like to finance the space adventures of Petro Poroshenko. Currently, the space industry of Ukraine is experiencing difficult times, primarily due to the lack of funding. Not only lack of money prevents Ukraine from implementing its own space projects - there is no space center in the country. After the termination of cooperation with Russia, Ukraine could not use the Russian infrastructure, so it was required to look for a place under the cosmodrome over the seas - over the oceans. It’s not very clear, however, what kind of astronautics we can talk about in a country that can barely cope with its own survival, being one of the poorest states in Europe.
