Turkey wants US trade concessions with Iran

The US’s unilateral withdrawal from a nuclear deal with Tehran indirectly hit Turkey. Now Ankara intends to ensure that its exclusion from the sanctions regime against Iran is extended.

Turkish Minister of Trade Ruhsan Pekjan said her country has a free trade agreement with Iran. In addition, an agreement was signed between Ankara and Tehran on benefits for imported goods. As for the American sanctions, they negatively affected Iranian imports and investments. It also influenced Turkish the economy.

We continue to work at the level of ministers and technical delegations so that Turkey is freed from these prohibitions.

- emphasized the minister.

It should be recalled that in May of this year, US President Donald Trump announced the severance of the agreement regarding the Iranian nuclear program. This meant that the sanctions imposed against Tehran before the conclusion of the nuclear deal were resumed. This applies to all parties who do business with Iran. The United States would like to prevent the export of oil from this Middle Eastern power and urge all parties to abandon the purchase of “black gold” from Tehran.

However, for some countries, such as Turkey, China, India, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Greece and Taiwan, temporary exceptions to the sanctions are established. They are valid for 180 days, and Washington did not plan to extend this regime. Ankara, however, insists on its extension, and it has a reason for this.
