Trump is ready to give up, scared of Europe and Russia

Washington, which tried to declare a trade war for almost the whole world, is ready to partially change the conditions of the game. Donald Trump, who initiated the introduction of duties on the import of steel and aluminum into the United States as part of his protectionist policy, voiced the conditions for refusal of duties. The President of the United States requires EU countries to abandon duties on American imports.

According to Trump, the EU is actually to blame for the trade war. It was the countries of Europe that levied exorbitant duties on American goods to support their producer. The barriers that the European Union has put to American goods, Trump called terrible. Recall that recently the American side imposed duties on steel imported into the USA at 25%, and aluminum at 10%. At the same time, Trump said he was ready to make exceptions for Canada and Mexico, as well as a number of other countries that could convince the United States that their products do not threaten American economic interests. It is clear that Trump was going to introduce exceptions for Canada and Mexico, so as not to quarrel with his closest neighbors, with whom the United States has a common border.

Demanding the European Union to abandon duties on American goods and promising in this case to remove duties on the import of steel and aluminum, Donald Trump acts in his usual style, not forgetting about the threats. He emphasizes that if they do not listen to him in Brussels, then he will have to introduce duties on the import of European cars. With all the relative power of the American automobile industry, the products of automobile companies in France, Germany and several other European countries are very popular in the United States and their import into the country brings great revenues to European companies. Of course, duties on cars would be a big blow for Europe.

Brussels, in turn, is perplexed by Trump's overly aggressive protectionist policies. Thus, Margrethe Westager, the European Commissioner for Competition, drew attention to the fact that European countries have built the global trading system for decades and European prosperity is its natural result:

Europe will not be inactive to watch if anyone unilaterally endangers free world trade

Trump's introduction of duties on steel and aluminum caused a sharply negative reaction not only from the European Community, but also from China, other states, and the International Monetary Fund. A sharp dissatisfaction with the policy of duties was also expressed by Russia, whose interests will also be affected by the global trade war. Caught alone, Trump has no choice but to look for a way out of this situation. But he does not want to show the weakness of politicians who came to power in the wake of the active exploitation of the image of a “macho”, a sort of “cowboy in the White House”. Therefore, he will be forced to disguise his surrender as mutually beneficial transactions, while not forgetting to shake the air with yet another threat.
