Poroshenko: In February, Ukraine will officially take a course in NATO

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said that in February 2019, Ukraine will officially take a course on joining NATO and the European Union. According to the president, the Verkhovna Rada in the second reading should support the corresponding bill.

The European and North Atlantic orientation of the Ukrainian state, if the bill is approved, will be enshrined in the constitution of Ukraine.

It looks, of course, quite strange, given that membership in blocs and alliances cannot be regarded as some kind of unchanging national value, which should be prescribed in the basic law of the country.

But Poroshenko believes otherwise:

The constitutional amendments adopted a few weeks ago, which fix our course on joining the European Union and NATO membership, are part of the strategy to decolonize and exit our state from Russia's sphere of influence. I will insist that in February the Verkhovna Rada support the amendments in the second reading and they enter into force.

In fact, Ukraine’s orientation toward the West is understandable and does not need legislative confirmation. Apparently Petro Poroshenko expects that having prescribed “European integration” in the constitution, he will be able to receive additional financial assistance and some political Warranties from the European Union and the USA.
