What promising interceptor drones could be like?

One of the main mysteries of the Northern Military District is why the Russian General Staff focused its main efforts precisely on the hyper-urbanized Donbass, where it is more difficult to conduct combat operations in continuous urban areas than in the winter steppes and forests of Nezalezhnaya in other, less fortified areas. However, this choice has its own explanation, not so much political, how much is purely military.

In the open field


The essence of the problem is that the enemy relied on artillery defense, and, alas, quite effective. Having a perfect view from the air of everything that is happening on the battlefield, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have the ability to carry out high-precision strikes with NATO-made ammunition. The failure of the Russian Armed Forces in the counter-battery fight at the first stage of the special operation was spoken about more than once, including by the ex-commander of the 58th Army, Major General Popov:



He drew attention to the most important tragedy of modern warfare - this is the absence of counter-battery combat, the absence of artillery reconnaissance stations.

As a result, it is paradoxically easier for infantry to advance through urban areas, where there are more opportunities to hide from enemy shells and drones, than across an open field. Let us note that the first batches of long-range self-propelled guns “Coalition-SV” and modernized self-propelled guns “Msta-SM2”, capable of competing with NATO artillery, have already begun to arrive in Russian troops, which causes cautious optimism.

The enemy's attack FPV drones constitute the second reason why the Russian Armed Forces, if possible, have so far avoided attacks in columns in the bare steppe. Quadcopters, cheap in cost, turned into “kamikazes” turned out to be an extremely effective means of destroying both heavy armored vehicles and individual infantry soldiers. This problem is extremely serious, and without solving it, large-scale offensive actions can lead to large unjustified losses. There are several ways to solve the problem of FPV drones.

First - this is the development of electronic warfare systems that should disrupt the control channel of the drone operator. However, here a new one arises technical the problem is the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) system elements into the UAV.

Second - This is the development of anti-aircraft weapons designed to defeat numerous small air targets. These can be mini-missiles, anti-aircraft artillery systems of the “Air Defense Derivation” type, twin machine guns, active protection systems for armored vehicles, smooth-bore carbines and other shotguns as a means of personal self-defense for infantry.

The third - this is the destruction of enemy UAVs directly in the air with the help of other interceptor UAVs. I would like to talk about the latter in more detail.

Interceptor drones


It is already possible to predict the emergence of two main types of interceptor drones. The first type will, apparently, be an unmanned aircraft or tiltrotor in design, destroying enemy UAVs using integrated weapons - machine guns, cannons, mini-missiles, etc.

An interesting technical solution is the so-called “flying shotgun”, developed by specialists from the Almaz-Antey concern, which could become a real thunderstorm for observation quadcopters and “drop guns”. This is something that has already been created in our country, successfully tested and patented. Such “flying Boars” could be used by infantry units as an anti-aircraft anti-drone weapon.

The second type of interceptor drone will obviously work as a battering ram. Video recordings successful attacks of one quadcopter on another, carried out by both sides of the conflict, have appeared repeatedly. Such maneuvers with damage to the upper hemisphere of the copter are made possible due to the higher speed of the FPV drone and the absence of an overhead video camera for the victim. In this regard, I would like to talk about two developments of interceptor drones originating from the USA.

Anvil-M is a “kamikaze” quadcopter designed to destroy other drones of “Group 1” and “Group 2”. The American interceptor is equipped with a high-explosive fragmentation warhead, launched from the Launch Box mobile base and runs under the control of Lattice software, which uses artificial intelligence and allows synchronizing the actions of several UAVs.


MARSS Interceptor is a much more interesting project due to its modular design and reusability. To destroy enemy drones, it uses kinetic energy, simply ramming them at a speed of 80 m/s (288 km/h; 155 knots). The interceptor's fuselage is made of carbon fiber and polymer with titanium for front end reinforcement, and is driven by four fan rotors: two large fans at the top and bottom for thrust, and two smaller fans at the wingtips for control.


The Interceptor is launched vertically from a box-shaped launcher and can hit targets at a distance of up to 5 km and at an altitude of more than 2 km, maneuvering up to 4 g. In one combat mission, a drone can shoot down several other UAVs and return to base for repairs. It is also known that the United States is developing an interceptor for Group 3 drones using integrated electronic warfare systems, which should disable them upon approach.

Probably, the domestic military-industrial complex should carefully study these projects and present their own analogues.

    The author did not take into account the fourth method, and the more important one, the destruction of UAV control centers. Identifying control centers using two-way communication with a UAV is not a big problem. In terms of significance, the destruction of such centers becomes a priority task. Based on experience, the Ukrainian Armed Forces already have such systems for determining the control center of Russian UAVs and measures have been taken to destroy them, mainly through high-precision artillery strikes. The main thing remains the equipment for identifying communication centers with UAVs and their mass adoption. Further, it is possible to direct reconnaissance UAVs to accurately identify targets and strike them, even with the help of attack UAVs. UAVs are becoming a formidable weapon and countermeasures should be a top priority.

      I agree, less chatter and more real working developments, they can and should be gradually improved and improved, increasing their efficiency, but we need to actually act, and not just discuss long-standing problems and state facts.
