The Verkhovna Rada demanded to rename the UOC

The church schism in Ukraine, over which its president Petro Poroshenko triumphed, deepens and sows hostility between believers. The Verkhovna Rada previously made a decision, according to which the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) is obliged to change its name.

This is a bill on amendments to the current law “On Freedom of Conscience and Religious Organizations”. 240 parliamentarians voted that the bill is taken as a basis. The legislative authority of the Ukrainian government requires the UOC in its name to reflect membership in the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC).

About the Ukrainian Orthodox Church it is said that it is part of a larger religious organization (ROC), which has a center in the country that committed "aggression" against Ukraine. Therefore, the UOC must reflect in its name belonging to such an organization located in another country. It is only permissible to add the words “in Ukraine” to the new name. In accordance with the new document, the priests of the UOC are waiting for restrictions: they will be prohibited from visiting military units of the Armed Forces. If the UOC decides not to be renamed, then part of its charter, which refers to the name, will be canceled.

Earlier, Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople stated that Metropolitan Onufry, who heads the UOC, will lose his title as Metropolitan of Kiev and all Ukraine.

The question of the situation in connection with the religious schism in Ukraine was asked by Russian President Vladimir Putin during his press conference. He said that this is “incomprehensible to the mind” and is an unprecedented interference of the Ukrainian state in religious affairs. Patriarch Bartholomew, according to him, has a selfish motive. In addition, Putin stressed, it could not have done “without a hint from Washington.”

The Russian leader expressed concern that a redistribution of church property could begin in the near future, which would lead to bloodshed.
