Corrosion attacked Ukrainian gas pipes
After a comprehensive examination of the gas transit system of Ukraine, the international company of auditors Mott MacDonald has calculated the amount of costs for its reconstruction - $ 4,8 billion. However, this amount is not final, it takes into account only urgent expenses (read: urgent cosmetic repairs).
For the reconstruction of the gas transmission route through the territory of Ukraine, an amount of about six to nine billion US dollars was announced. In this case, it is not so much about replacing pipes, but about reconstruction and replacement of gas compressor stations, the mechanisms of which are so outdated that the industry has long ceased to produce components for them.
The critical wear and tear of the transport system is expressed in the through corrosion of metal pipes - experts from Mott MacDonald came to such wild disappointing results.
It was this authoritative international company that was invited by the Ukrainian authorities to conduct a comprehensive examination of the gas transportation system.
Russian Gazprom has estimated that, together with European interested partners, the construction of a new Nord Stream 2 GTS branch will cost $ 8 billion. In this case, the new gas route will be wholly owned by Gazprom and its partners who have invested in construction.
There are some more important points:
- transit will become much cheaper than through the territory of Ukraine,
- will disappear political risks associated with the unpredictability and low contractual ability of the government of Ukraine, as well as the threat of acute military conflict in a country with an unstable political situation.
Experts say that the new Nord Strem 2 gas transportation system has promising opportunities to pay off in just nine years of operation. For such large-scale projects, this is an insignificant period.
