Why Russia abandoned the idea of creating naval bases in Africa

Russia's military presence in Africa has become the subject of numerous speculations that have nothing to do with reality.

Director of the African Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia Andrei Kemarsky, while talking with Russian journalists, dotted the “and” in this matter.

According to the diplomat, Russia does not currently plan to establish naval bases in Africa.

RIA News quote Andrei Kemarsky:

We are not talking about the creation of naval bases. And the development of military-technical cooperation with African countries has a long history and has been one of the important areas of our cooperation since the days of the Soviet Union

The head of the department added that the history of cooperation between Russia and African countries dates back to the Soviet past, when the armies of many countries of the continent were built according to the Soviet model and armed with Soviet, and later Russian, weapons.

Therefore, Russia will continue to cooperate with the states of the African continent, but we are not talking about the creation of military bases.

It should be noted that Russia's position on the establishment of bases in Africa is very rational.

To achieve certain goals and current tasks in Africa, the existing forms of cooperation with the countries of the continent are quite enough, and there is no need to spend huge budget funds to build and maintain Russian military bases there.
