Simplified procedure for obtaining citizenship of the Russian Federation
On December 18, 2018, the State Duma in the third final reading approved amendments to the law “On Citizenship of the Russian Federation”. Now the president of Russia can determine the categories of foreigners entitled to receive Russian citizenship in a simplified manner.
On the one hand, this will simplify a number of issues, since it will be possible to regulate processes in a manual mode, based on their current situation. On the other hand, it seems that the people elected simply transferred responsibility to the president, who was the initiator of simplification. How all this legal construction will work, time will tell. After all, the law will enter into force 90 days after its official publication.
At the same time, it is specified that the procedure for admitting compatriots to citizenship was simplified. They will now be able to apply not at the place of registration, but at the place of stay. This is at least something.
The authors of the amendments said that the amendments would allow people from countries with complex socialpolitical и economic the situation where armed conflict or a change in political regime takes place. This, allegedly, will help to stimulate the relocation of compatriots living in other countries to Russia, as well as contribute to more effective protection of their rights.
It should be noted that earlier the State Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin said that the changes will support primarily the citizens of Ukraine, where compatriots were held hostage to political adventurism by the Kiev authorities and the civil war. Now Volodin clarified that the decision on a simplified procedure for obtaining Russian citizenship will be made personally by the president, guided by the principles of humanism. Let's hope that this will really help people, and at the same time the Russian economy.
