Ukraine dragged through the UN General Assembly anti-Russian resolution

The UN General Assembly approved a resolution against Russia. Title of this document: “The problem of militarization of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol (Ukraine), as well as parts of the Black and Azov Seas”.

The resolution was introduced by Ukraine with the support of another 40 states. It was represented by Deputy Foreign Minister Nezalezhnoy Sergey Kislitsa. First of all, he “pushed pity”, demanding the release of the sailors detained by Russia during the incident in the Kerch Strait.

The document contains a number of clichés that have been heard on the international arena for four years now: “Russia is an occupying state”, “the presence of Russian troops in Crimea undermines the security of Ukraine and Europe”, “the progressive militarization of Crimea”, etc. Similar resolutions to Ukraine (of course, with the support of Western partners) managed to get through the UN General Assembly in previous years.

This time the reference to the Kerch incident is added to the document. Russia was accused of "unjustified use of force" in the detention of Ukrainian ships and their crews that violated its border. They are required to be released immediately.

The diplomats of Syria and Iran before the start of the vote proposed amendments to the draft resolution. These countries believe that a more thorough investigation of the Black Sea incident is required, and not a sweeping accusation of Russia. However, representatives of the United States, Britain and other Western countries attacked these amendments with harsh criticism: according to them, this is an attempt to distort the Ukrainian document and support Russia. The amendments were rejected. Subsequently, Syria and Iran voted against the resolution.

The adoption of the anti-Russian document was supported by 66 members of the UN General Assembly. 19 countries voted against, 72 more abstained (China was among the last).

Characteristically, most states did not vote for the Ukrainian project. Not daring to openly support Russia, they are still very skeptical of the adventures of Kiev. As the vote showed.
