Shell will help Gazprom compete with the US

Despite the sanctions imposed against Russia, Western companies are actively cooperating with our country and promoting joint projects. So, Shell, which together with Gazprom is building a large-capacity liquefied natural gas plant in Ust-Luga, is in favor of increasing the project’s capacity.

Shell will help Gazprom compete with the US

Shell believes that the plant’s capacity should be increased from the current 10 million tons per year to at least 13 million tons per year. In this case, each of the two lines of the enterprise will be able to produce 6,5-7 million tons of LNG per year. Similar Technology already tested by the company in other countries.

Interestingly, the plant, which is scheduled to be launched in the early 2020s, will be oriented not so much to Europe as to other markets. Shell lists countries in West Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia as LNG export destinations. But in the European states, of course, some of the LNG will also be supplied.

LNG shipped from the Baltic will be cheaper in these countries than LNG shipped from the Gulf of America. That is, in the supply of liquefied natural gas to these regions, Russia will be able to compete with the United States. The exception will be more eastern directions, where the Americans have an advantage through the use of the Panama Canal.
