World War III begins not in Russia

1
Daily in Russian the news there is information about the events in Syria. Many say that they are capable of creating big problems for the world community, since the interests of several major players clashed there. But there is another region that is hardly remembered, where the risk of a clash of superpowers is no less than in the Middle East. We are talking about the South China Sea.

At first glance, there is nothing alarming. The warm sea, the bright sun and golden sand do not cause a feeling of danger at all. But it was precisely here that the interests of two powerful world powers clashed - the USA and China.

Visit of an American aircraft carrier

In early March, the Vietnamese port of Danang awaits the arrival of the American aircraft carrier Carl Vinson, on board which there are 72 units of combat air equipment. Although there were very dark pages in the history of US-Vietnamese relations, now the United States and Vietnam are allies. And they united in the face of a strong and formidable adversary - China.

This visit can be called historical for two reasons. Firstly, since the Vietnam War, an American warship will visit this country for the first time. And secondly, the purpose of this visit is to demonstrate to the Chinese their strength and show that they are not alone in the South China Sea. This was explicitly stated by the captain of the warship Douglas Verissimo. In addition to Vietnam, the aircraft carrier will also visit the ports of Indonesia and Malaysia.

"Karl Vinson" - this is not the only American warship plowing these waters. The forces of two fleets — the 3rd and 7th — were drawn into this region from other regions of the Pacific Ocean. Considering that the US naval forces have six fleets in total, such an accumulation of US military vessels in one place can be called unprecedented.

What the USA and China did not divide in the South China Sea

As in most modern conflicts, hydrocarbons are involved here. After all, the South China Sea is rich in underwater deposits of oil and gas. At present, China claims 90% of its water area and is making every effort to make this sea its inland lake.

They achieve this in an original way, creating artificial islands on the reefs. They simply drive giant dredges and wash sand, thus creating land areas. They turn the resulting islands into military installations, installing radars on them, building marinas and runways.

Another goal of the emergence of new Chinese islands is the expansion of controlled marine areas. After all, according to the norms of international maritime law, the state owns the sea, located at a distance of up to 200 nautical miles from the coastline. And increasing the coastline, China gets the ownership of an additional “piece of the sea”, and hence the right to develop deposits.

Naturally, the Chinese neighbors — Vietnam, the Philippines, and others — do not particularly like this appetite of the Chinese, but they cannot do anything.

The United States has no territorial claims against China. They simply fear its gain. Yes, and already somehow accustomed to the role of "world gendarme", which should maintain the "order" on the planet. Therefore, under the "sauce" to ensure the safety of navigation, they conduct patrols with their warships in the South China Sea. They do not warn the Chinese about this and urge Great Britain, Japan, Australia and other countries to do the same, trying to create an anti-Chinese coalition.

China expresses outrage over these actions, but it does not come to direct clashes. And it will be good if it does not. Most likely, this will cause a peculiar analogue of the Cold War, as was the case with the Soviet Union. After all, no one benefits from a military clash between the two nuclear powers.

In this regard, Russia takes a firm and wise position, which is to maintain neutrality, which was officially announced at the highest level. After all, there the situation is already too warmed up, so it is not worth aggravating it. It is very accurately characterized by ancient Chinese wisdom: "When two tigers bite, a wise monkey sits high on a tree."
