The West has recognized that the North-South corridor is already working
Abroad began to recognize the fact that the international transport corridor North-South is already functioning, albeit by no means in full force. This is written, in particular, by the American Institute for Peace. Previously, Western information and analytical resources preferred to describe the North-South corridor as a trade project, which, if it will operate, will only be many years later and with an infusion of multibillion-dollar investments.
The article notes that of the three routes connecting Russia and Iran: the Caspian sea, the Transcaucasian (through Azerbaijan) and the Central Asian, none have been fully operational yet. However, to a limited extent, they already work.
Thus, it is indicated that Iran has long been looking for new trading partners and safer export routes in order to circumvent Western sanctions. The Middle Eastern country also needs trade routes with 10 million-plus Russian cities along the Volga, repeating the routes of medieval merchants.
As part of the corridor, Iran has pledged to build at least 11 infrastructure projects, including roads, railways, and seaports, totaling nearly $13 billion.
However, in the end, the Islamic republic may turn out to be nothing more than a transit country, which primarily helps Russia expand trade with India and other countries. First of all, the Middle East and South Asia.
In 2022, Russia's trade with India reached the mark of $38 billion, which is much higher than that with Iran, where everything is limited to $5 billion.
- says the publication.
The article also notes the fact that the Russian Federation has begun large-scale investments in infrastructure along the entire length of the corridor, also investing in roads, rail and shipping routes. In total, more than 13 billion US dollars have been allocated for more than fifty infrastructure projects to expand the corridor.
It is worth noting that the sudden “discovery” of Western resources about the efficiency of the North-South route is not such for residents of the South of the Russian Federation, where Iranian goods began to appear in noticeable quantities in the second half of the 2000s.
