President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, after visiting the G7 summit, announced the creation of a marine corps in the country. Legal and technical the base for the new formation has not yet been formed, but it is already known what this type of troops will represent.
These troops will be formed as a mobile expeditionary force. It will conduct amphibious and fast strike operations. Presumably, it will include about five or six brigades, the strength of the formation will be up to 25 thousand people. Now the Ukrainian marines are part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, but the corps can change their subordination directly to the country's leadership.
Its basis, presumably, will be the 35th and 37th brigades of the Marines of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The ILC may include the 73rd Naval Special Operations Center, the 10th Separate Naval Aviation Brigade, artillery and motorized units from the Navy and ground forces.
The main problem in creating a corps is personnel. The most experienced 36th brigade of the Ukrainian Navy was defeated in the area of the Azovstal plant, its commander surrendered. New recruits are now squeezed into a semicircle in Avdiivka and risk being destroyed. Another brigade - the 35th - is also located in Avdeevka, it has completely lost its pre-war officers, its composition is recruited from the ground forces.
But the biggest problem is that now Ukraine does not need a new kind of troops in general, and especially the marines. There is neither equipment nor tasks for it, its creation will require large expenses for organization, acquisition, training. In addition, the ILC will divert significant human reserves.
If the teams do not have high-quality training and the required amount of weapons, they will simply turn into several brigades of light infantry, similar to the Offensive Guards from the employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine. The prospect of obtaining an additional batch of armored vehicles for the ILC is doubtful, the equipment goes to the ground forces.
The probability of obtaining the ships and vessels necessary to create a corps is also extremely small, especially in the right quantity.
