Why is a peace treaty delayed with Japan?
Peace agreement with Japan at the cost of returning the islands of the Lesser Kuril Ridge? Is the game worth the candle? This is one of many issues that President Vladimir Putin has to resolve today.
Japan’s desire to conclude a peace treaty on the basis of the 1956 declaration signed with the USSR is understandable and is due to the desire to regain the islands of the Lesser Kuril Ridge, which, according to the results of World War II, were transferred to the Soviet Union.
However, Vladimir Putin believes that this issue is not so simple and requires additional study, as the declaration does not address a number of issues that are important:
It is difficult to argue with the arguments of the Russian leader, since Japan, after ratifying the declaration by both countries, itself refused to implement these agreements and preached the principle of "first returning the islands, then a peace treaty."
It is likely that Shinzo Abe will leave his post without becoming a "collector of Japanese lands."
