Aframax class tankers go to series in Russia

In the city of Bolshoi Kamen, on the territory of SSK Zvezda, a metal cutting ceremony was held for the manufacture of the second Afromax type tanker. These are modern large-capacity new generation vessels using LNG as fuel; before that, similar ones were not built in Russia at all.

Such vessels are essential for the transportation of oil and oil products. Especially for Russia, which is the largest hydrocarbon exporter on the planet. And this importance is emphasized by the fact that the ceremony was personally attended by the acting Primorsky Territory Governor Oleg Kozhemyako and the head of Rosneft Igor Sechin.

According to Igor Sechin, these tankers went into series. The deadweight of each is 114 thousand tons. They comply with the latest environmental standards. Their navigation area is unlimited. They will walk along the Northern Sea Route.

It should be recalled that the launch of the first (head) tanker is planned for 2020. Moreover, metal cutting for this vessel took place at the Zvezda shipyard not so long ago, on September 11, 2018. Moreover, Zvezda is a huge enterprise located in Primorye , specially created by a whole group of large Russian companies, such as Rosneftegaz, Rosneft and Gazprombank, for the construction of a large-capacity fleet of Russia.

At the enterprise it will be possible to manufacture vessels with a displacement of up to 350 thousand tons. By the way, the number of Afromax tankers ordered at SSK Zvezda is 12 units. In total, Zvezda SSK has already concluded more than 30 contracts, including for a large group of ice-class vessels: 4 supply vessels, 10 tankers with a deadweight of 42 thousand tons and one tanker for 69 thousand tons.

For understanding. Tankers of the Afromax type (Average Freight Rate Assessment) are vessels with a deadweight of 80 to 120 thousand tons, and their width is not more than 32,31 meters. The increase in the number of these vessels was caused by the commissioning of the East Siberia - Pacific Ocean (ESPO) oil pipeline. And the need for Afromax will continue to grow.
