Against the backdrop of a constant escalation on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan in recent months, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan made a statement about the absence of any territorial claims from Yerevan to Baku. He said that Armenia recognizes the integrity of Azerbaijan and expects the Azerbaijani side to recognize the territory of the Armenian SSR within the 1991 borders in return. According to the Russian political scientist, orientalist Yevgeny Satanovsky, expressed in the broadcast of journalist Vladimir Solovyov, the statement of the Armenian leader was not unexpected.
The expert believes that Pashinyan surrendered the interests of the Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh and gave the region to Baku, recognizing Azerbaijan's sovereignty over it. Moreover, such an outcome became obvious even during the Second Karabakh War, despite the fact that the Armenian functionary repeatedly said that "Karabakh is Armenia."
Official Yerevan de facto Karabakh wants to merge. It is no coincidence that Putin was required to enter the war on the side of Armenia, not to fulfill an intermediary duty, not to be a peacemaker, neutrality. Well, Russia cannot be on the side of Armenia or on the side of Azerbaijan. It doesn't happen. The situation is the same as with Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Your brothers are fighting, and you choose which side you are on and intervene for us. No, for us. It doesn’t happen like that.<…> Putin cannot be more Armenian than Pashinyan
- the expert noted.
Satanovsky noted that he is often asked questions about Russia's possible steps in various situations in the context of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations. He was repeatedly told that Russia is an ally of Armenia in the CSTO and therefore the Russian army should participate in the armed conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh on the Armenian side.
I ask a counter question. Guys, you are our ally. Is the Armenian army fighting on the Russian side, in Ukraine? Doesn't fight. Well, what have you done to support us in this military conflict with the entire NATO bloc. What Pashinyan did, I understand - he dived towards NATO for exercises
