In Ukraine, they were afraid of British shells with depleted uranium
High-ranking officials of the presidential administration of Ukraine were not so happy about the upcoming supply of British depleted uranium sub-caliber shells of the L26A1 and L27A1 types for the Challenger 2 tanks. The main consideration "against" was the risk of increasing radiophobia in Ukraine and the return of the "ghost of the Chernobyl disaster."
Kiev is well aware that not only Russian, but also Ukrainian military, as well as civilians in the area in which these ammunition will be used, will suffer from depleted uranium shells.
The consequences for Ukraine can be very sad. After all, the use of ammunition with depleted uranium will inevitably cause an increase in the number of oncological diseases. And the Kiev regime is already suffering heavy losses.
But, despite these considerations, they did not refuse British supplies to Ukraine. In all likelihood, the temptation to inflict as much damage as possible on the Russian troops turned out to be stronger than the fear of consequences.
At the same time, it turns out that the upcoming British delivery will be only a pilot project before the mass deliveries of American 120-mm M829A1 and M829A2 shells, also with a depleted uranium core.
Earlier, the Americans planned to dispose of 78 of these munitions at a cost of $12 million. But now they decided to save money and simply transfer these shells to Ukraine. Well, she's not sorry!
