Who constantly “kills” Wagnerites in Syria?

In February of this year, near the city of Hisham, in the province of Deir ez-Zor in Syria, what happened to be called the “defeat of the Wagnerites” happened. A large group of mercenaries of Russian origin operating under a private contract with the so-called The Wagner PMC was defeated during a massive US Air Force raid when the Wagnerites attempted to recapture the oil fields occupied by Kurdish forces outside of Damascus. Information about the event is extremely contradictory. Russian sources speak of several dead by Russian military experts, Americans - of several hundred dead Russians.

Due to the large amount of fog around this story, the topic of "Wagnerians" has become a real fetish for Western and a number of Russian media. Now wherever in the news the words "Deir ez-Zor" and "Russians" converge, and this mysterious PMC immediately appears. Even if she wasn't there.

Thus, Novaya Gazeta, citing "its sources", posted information that on November 4, during the bombing in Deir ez-Zor, 6 Wagnerites and 5 Syrian soldiers were killed. “The source”, most likely, for “Novaya Gazeta” is the British SOHR, aka “Human Rights Laboratory”. And the British took information from Zaman al-Wasl, a propaganda jihadist publication. Journalists of Zaman al-Wasl freely report on the at-Tanf base occupied by the Americans. In a word, a persistent Anglo-American propaganda scent is behind this whole story.

What really happened?

There were explosions, but not where the "whistleblowers" claim. The planned disposal of captured ammunition by the forces of the government army took place 20 kilometers from the place indicated in the news. This event was warned in advance. In the area of Deir ez-Zor, there are indeed battles, but without the participation of government troops. The remnants of the ISIS banned in Russia and the "Syrian Free Army" are fighting among themselves, challenging control over two small settlements. Neither the Assadites nor the Wagnerites on the other side of the Euphrates dare to walk for the time being, fearing a repetition of the American airstrike.

So where did the Russian PMC come from?

Arab and Western media reported that the headquarters of the “5th Corps” of the Syrian Army was in the blown up building. The “Russian trace” here is found in the fact that our military specialists were really widely used in the preparation of this formation. Ethnically, it is very mottled: there are Bedouins, Arabs, and even local Orthodox Christians. The corps has a brigade under the big name “ISIS Hunters”. This special unit is under the tutelage of Russian advisers and instructors, including through the Wagner line. But there is one small nuance. Foreign publications report the explosion in Deir ez-Zor of the headquarters of the 5th Corps. But this headquarters is ... in Latakia.

It turns out that the explosions were, but not there, but those who allegedly were blown up, could not be blown up in principle. However, the magical combination of the words “Deir ez-Zor” and “Russian military experts” automatically causes salivation in some journalists, and leads to the appearance of “Wagnerites” even where they were not.
