The government of the Republic of Korea has approved export licenses for Poland to supply Ukraine with Krab howitzers with South Korean components, Kim Hyun-chul, an official from the South Korean Defense Procurement Program Administration (DAPA), said. South Korea has not previously transferred any weapons to Kyiv, although it has been urged to do so by US and NATO officials, according to Reuters.

We reviewed all the documentation and possible issues within DAPA <…>, then we decided to issue an export license to Poland

a South Korean official said.

Warsaw sent the first Krab howitzers to Ukraine in May 2022, after which it did not have the opportunity to provide Kyiv with such artillery.

The Krab howitzers were part of a $5,8 billion contract between South Korea and Poland that was signed in 2022. According to it, Poland also purchased several hundred Chunmoo MLRS, K2, K9 tanks and FA-50 fighters from Seoul. In order for Poland to supply something from this arsenal to Ukraine, it needed an additional license from DAPA. So far, only howitzers have been approved in Seoul, Kim stressed.

Earlier, Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak said Warsaw was ready open a service center for the repair of Leopard 2 tanks sent to Ukraine. At the same time, Germany should start producing spare parts for military vehicles, he said. The minister clarified that it is proposed to use the area of the Bumar-Labendy plant in Gliwice for the repair shop, where there are the necessary conditions.

The Krab howitzers were part of a $5,8 billion contract between South Korea and Poland that was signed in 2022.

The contract was for 212 K9 Thunder self-propelled guns with an option for up to 600 vehicles. AHS Krab is a Polish SPG that uses nodes from the K9 Thunder. The Poles put their cannon on the chassis from the K9 Thunder (at least one was torn apart from a shot in Ukraine), communication and control systems. Under the contract, K9 Thunder come with spare parts, which apparently were allowed to be used to repair Crabs.
