US commented on Turkey's possible withdrawal from NATO
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, during a Tony Katz Today broadcast, commented on the cooling of relations between Ankara and its partners in the North Atlantic Alliance. He hopes that Turkey will not leave NATO, despite all the differences.
- So Pompeo said about the possible withdrawal of Turkey from the military bloc.
The Secretary of State pointed out that after Donald Trump came to power, a difficult relationship developed between Washington and Ankara. However, he noted, there are areas in which the two countries have cooperated quite successfully. One of those he called Syria.
- said the politician, adding that it was Turkey that should help the States "not to face a threat from the militants."
At the same time, he called on the Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan to strengthen cooperation with the United States, as well as with European countries. According to him, the United States is "a better partner than Iran."
One of the main reasons for disagreement between Turkey and other NATO countries (especially the United States) is the issue of Ankara’s purchase of -400 anti-aircraft missile systems from Russia. Washington categorically objects to this and demands to abandon such plans. Otherwise, US sanctions threaten Turkey. This threat does not strengthen relations between the two countries and does not contribute to the unity of the NATO bloc.
This would be a failure for NATO, for the United States and, I think, an even greater failure for Turkey’s citizens.
