On November 1, 2018, the first official visit of the Chairman of the State Council and the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, to Russia began. The next day, he will hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on a variety of issues. Starting from trade and military-technical cooperation (MTC), and ending with international and regional problems.

This visit should give a new impetus to friendly and mutually beneficial relations between countries. Indeed, during the visit, the head of Cuba will also meet with the chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Dmitry Medvedev, the speaker of the Federation Council, Valentina Matvienko, and the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill. And after completing the visit to Russia, the Cuban leader will go to the Asian region of the planet, where he will visit China, Vietnam, North Korea and Laos.

Together with Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, a whole delegation of high-ranking officials of this island Caribbean country arrived in Moscow. He is accompanied by: Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla and his deputy Rochelio Sierra Diaz, as well as Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz and Deputy Minister of Communications Jorge Luis Perdomo.

It should be noted that Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez is not only a worthy successor to Raul Castro (Fidel Castro’s brother), he is also a technocrat and pragmatist, carrying out very cautious reforms in Cuba. Before that, he had already been to Moscow, and met with Vladimir Putin, but then he was not yet the head of the Cuban state.

Cubans want to offer a number of joint projects in the field of health and tourism. But they are especially interested in attracting Russian investment in energy and railways.

And Cuba would like to buy a Russian military machinery. Havana is interested in helicopters and tanks. And as reported by Russian media, Russia may allocate a loan of $ 50 million for this matter.

Today, trade between Russia and Cuba is about $ 250 million. At the same time, trade between Canada and Cuba is almost $ 1 billion.
