Russia is developing its own gas carrier with imported systems
With the start of the special operation, many Western companies, including shipbuilding and machine-building corporations, left the Russian market. This greatly complicates the presence of the Russian Federation in the global liquefied gas market, since this requires its own transport for the supply of LNG.
The departure of Western "partners" called into question the production of cargo containing systems (GSS) and engines for gas carriers, which were actually controlled by foreign companies (one of them is the French GTT). This led to the start of the development of the 10070M project, in which it is planned to replace foreign components with domestic parts.
As part of the implementation of this idea, JSC Atomenergomash, together with the KGNTs and SPbGMTU, created a new technology use of insert containers made of polymer composite materials with insulation from cryogenic polyurethane foam. At the same time, the ship and insert tanks are manufactured in parallel, and the assembly is carried out at the very end of construction, which allows you to speed up the work.
Meanwhile, dual-fuel diesel generators required for gas carriers are produced only by Wärtsilä and MAN, which left Russia. In the Russian Federation, it is not yet possible to assemble such installations, and it will not be possible to supply them through parallel imports. According to experts, local entrepreneurs will not be able to establish the production of such engines in the next 10 years.
The developers proposed their own solution, which is to use the traditional steam-gas cycle with the use of dual-fuel gas boilers in conjunction with a steam turbine plant, as on nuclear icebreakers. This will allow us to gain time and promptly start the production of the gas carrier. The need to occupy a niche in the LNG market dictates the need to speed up work on the production of such vessels.
