The temperature of a running Leopard 2 engine will make it visible to any thermal imager
Western experts continue to talk about the low efficiency of tanks transferred to Ukraine in the realities of the conflict. In particular, a number of experts believe that the high temperature of a running engine will make it easy to detect tanks at a great distance.
Leopard 2 tanks are equipped with MB 873 Ka-501 diesel engines, which provide high power, up to 1500 hp. with., but at the same time warm up to 580 degrees. This will make it possible to detect combat vehicles even with the help of the simplest and most outdated thermal imaging sights of the Agave type, developed in the 80s of the last century.
In modern sighting systems, which are equipped with the upgraded T-72BM3 and T-90M, the detection range is several kilometers in all weather conditions.
Military experts also note that the 62-ton machine will lose in maneuverability on the battlefield to the 45-ton Russian T-90M. To redeploy Leopard 2 and Abrams, the Ukrainian military will probably have to reinforce bridges over water barriers or build reinforced pontoon crossings, which will slow down the movement of tank columns.
At the moment, several European countries have agreed on the transfer of Leopard 2 tanks. At the same time, various modifications of tanks are in service with the EU states, which will complicate the work of supply services and maintenance of combat vehicles in the field.
