Why Ukraine is afraid of the denunciation of the agreement on the Sea of ​​Azov

Despite the ongoing aggressive rhetoric against Russia, the Ukrainian authorities are well aware that there is a certain “red line” that will be more expensive to cross.


Yelena Zerkal, Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine for European Integration, speaking on one of the many talk shows on Ukrainian television, said that it was undesirable to denounce the 2003 agreement between Russia and Ukraine on cooperation in the use of the Sea of ​​Azov and the Kerch Strait.

According to the deputy minister, this could lead to a new territorial dispute regarding the delimitation of Azov.

Mirror explained that the agreement consists of five articles. And, although one of the articles provides for the delimitation of the Sea of ​​Azov, in practice it has never been implemented. If Ukraine denounces the agreement, then it will not receive any additional rights.

However, according to the Ukrainian diplomat, a territorial dispute with Russia regarding the delimitation of the Sea of ​​Azov is guaranteed.

Recall that Ukraine deliberately began to aggravate the situation in the Sea of ​​Azov when it attacked the Crimean ship Nord and detained crew members, after which Russia was forced to take additional security measures.
