For the first time, Russian troops, together with a UN mission in the Syrian Golan, patrolled the separation line between Syria and Israel. This was announced by Deputy Commander of the Russian Forces in Syria Sergey Kuralenko.

Russian military went to the border with Israel

The Russian lieutenant general noted that the military police of the Russian Federation have been patrolling the demilitarized zone between the Syrian Arab Republic and the Jewish state for quite some time. But in this case, the first joint patrol was conducted with United Nations forces. Military police from Russia ensured the safety of employees of an international organization.

Patrolling was carried out in the territory located south of the border crossing "Kuneitra". The opening of this border crossing allowed us to complete the tasks. In addition to the fact that the patrols checked the safety of the route, they also examined the status of UN posts.

In the future, we plan to continue to conduct joint patrols directly to the southernmost point of the demilitarized zone

- said Kuralenko. He added that in the future the patrol zone will expand.

It should be noted that the Golan (Golan Heights) is a Syrian territory that was occupied by Israel after the Six Day War in 1967. Part of the Golan along with the city of Kuneitra were returned to Syria after the 1973 war. The UN does not recognize the annexation of the Golan, as several resolutions of the Security Council and the General Assembly were adopted. To end the war, it was decided to organize a special UN mission on the line of separation of forces.

During the current Syrian conflict, in 2012, the terrorists managed to seize the territory adjacent to the separation line. The UN mission was forced to leave its checkpoints. And only this year, in early August, with the help of Russian troops, the Syrian army liberated this territory. This allowed the return of the UN mission to the area, the assistance of which is carried out by the Russian military police.
