The volume of traffic along the Northern Sea Route will increase ten times

The Northern Sea Route (Northern Sea Route) provides the shortest connection between the European part of the country and the Far East, and to a large extent Russia needs it. But, as an alternative to the Suez Canal, it can be useful to all of Eurasia.

In 2017, freight traffic along the Northern Sea Route amounted to 10,7 million tons. Moreover, 9,7 million tons of cargo were transported by sea vessels, 797,2 thousand tons by river vessels, 194,4 thousand tons by transit vessels. This is 42,6% more than was transported in 2016, when the cargo turnover amounted to 7,5 million tons.

It is not difficult to guess that such a solid growth is caused, first of all, by the implementation of various projects by Russia itself (raw materials, transport, defense and others) in the Arctic and other hard-to-reach places. And it was not in vain that at the end of December 2017 amendments were made to the Merchant Shipping Code of Russia. Now it was the vessels under the Russian flag that received the exclusive right to transport gas and oil along the Northern Sea Route.

But the statement by the head of the Ministry of Energy of Russia Alexander Novak, voiced at a government meeting, deserves special attention. According to him, the country faces an ambitious task, to increase the level of cargo flow to 80 million tons per year as soon as possible. Of these, 50 million tons will be LNG and condensate, which are extracted in the Yamal and Gydan. And the goal set is quite feasible, and in the long term the cargo flow can grow even more.

He is sure that the development of the Northern Sea Route is impossible without the presence of a modern nuclear fleet. The conclusion is clear, you need to build specialized vessels - icebreakers. The country simply needs five nuclear-powered universal wagons with a capacity of 60 MW, and three nuclear-powered ships of the Leader class with a capacity of 120 MW.
