Russia's Super Task: How to Break the Boeing and Airbus Monopoly

2
By 2030, Russia should have its own line of civilian aircraft capable of competing on equal terms with Western counterparts.

Destroy the monopoly that is on the market today: Boeing and Airbus dominate the market. Our joint project with China should be the foundation for the formation of a new player in the global market, which was the Soviet aviation industry in Soviet times.

- Such an ambitious task facing the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation was voiced by Mikhail Poghosyan, known for his experience in working on the SSJ100 airliner project.

According to a member of the RAS, by then Russia should have its own short-haul, medium-haul and long-haul aircraft. The academician shared his vision of the domestic airliner of the future: displays will be used instead of buttons and levers in the cockpit, and the planes themselves will become smart and can do without pilots over time, thanks to the active development of artificial intelligence systems.

What do we have available today and on the way in the very near future?

Sukhoi Superjet 100.
Created under the leadership of Mikhail Pogosyan himself, the short-haul airliner has long been considered the main hope of the civil aircraft industry in Russia. The plane is often criticized for a large number of components manufactured in Western countries. However, supporters of the project claim that this was done with the expectation of passing certification according to European EASA standards. The developers intended to actively sell the Sukhoi Superjet 100 not only to the domestic market, but also abroad. It is known that currently in Mexico, buyers of Russian airliners are experiencing serious problems with the timely supply of components for their repair due to the lack of a developed service network.

MS-21.
This “21st Century main liner” has every chance of becoming the main workhorse of the Russian sky. And not only Russian.

For the first time in domestic practice, the aircraft will have two engines - American and Russian, airlines will choose depending on priorities, characteristics, reliability, etc. a plane with a particular engine.

- says Mikhail Poghosyan.

According to him, the “twin-engine” MS-21 may prove to be its strength when entering foreign markets, where American and European manufacturers rule, and Russian liners will have to pass certification. The development of our own PD-14 engine, which is absolutely competitive with Western ones, due to its greater efficiency, environmental friendliness and reduced noise during operation, can be considered a real achievement of the domestic aircraft industry of recent times.

CR 929.
This Russian-Chinese aircraft should occupy the segment of long-haul communications. The wide-body airliner will be able to transport comfortably from 250 to 300 passengers. The fuselage will be Chinese, the wings will be Russian. Engineering will be carried out in Moscow, assembly in Shanghai. Initially, Western-made engines will be installed on the CR 929, which will make it easier for the Russian-Chinese aircraft to enter western markets. Obviously, the Russian "UAC" will automatically gain access to the huge Chinese aviation market through the ownership of 50% of the joint project. In the future, the transition of a long-range aircraft to the PD-35 engine currently being developed in our country is possible.

Thus, we can state that there are certain achievements in the field of civil aircraft manufacturing, but for their advancement we will need truly effective management without any quotes.

Without the state loyalty program, the air carrier will choose based on cost effectiveness and a network of service centers. The second for today is not at all in our favor. Without state support, a loss at the start.
