Why Iran has problems with the Sukhoi Superjet 100
The sale of 10-12 Sukhoi Superjet 100 aircraft (Sukhoi Superjet 100) to Tehran has been discussed since 2015. The stumbling block is the sanctions that the United States imposed on Iran. The manufacturer of the airliner, Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company (GSS), simply cannot sell aircraft to Iran without the approval of components suppliers from the United States.
Moreover, the Russians have already applied to the US Department of the Treasury’s Office for Foreign Assets Control with a corresponding application for approval of supplies of the aforementioned aircraft to Iran. But things are still there. And Iran will be able to buy these planes only after resolving this problem.
Indeed, in these aircraft a significant amount of all foreign (and not only from the United States). For example, power supply systems, wheels and brakes from UTC Aerospace Systems, oxygen systems from B / E Aerospace, auxiliary power plants from Honeywell, hydraulic systems from Parker, engines from Safran (in partnership with UEC-Saturn), avionics from Thales.
But Iran really needs such aircraft, since most of the country's airports in the provinces are not able to receive large airliners. That is why the Iranian ambassador to Russia, Mr. Mehdi Sanai, is worried, who no longer relies on the American "good", but on the success of Russian import substitution. He expressed hope for a speedy and successful resolution of the situation. And she is looking forward to the moment when Iran can begin the long-awaited and sought-after purchase.
It should be clarified that in February 2018, a project was presented on a shortened version of the aircraft described above. It has only 75 seats, a flight range of up to two thousand kilometers, plus partial unification with the Irkut MC-21. So with undisguised interest we will wait for the further development of events.
