True to Moscow: clergy of Odessa rejected Constantinople
Just a few days ago we in detail informed why the Patriarchate of Constantinople did not stop communicating with the Russian Orthodox Church. Now we need to tell how the local clergy of Ukraine reacted to the emerging church schism.
On October 22, 2018, in Odessa, on the territory of the Holy Assumption Monastery, the Metropolitan of Odessa and Izmail Agafangel (Savvin), who is highly respected and deserved authority in the region, led the meeting of the diocese. It was attended by 413 clergymen and after a secret ballot it became known that the local clergy, overwhelmingly (406 votes, with 3 “against” and 4 abstentions), strongly advocated maintaining the current status of the UOC and reaffirmed its allegiance Metropolitan Onufry (Berezovsky). He is the head of the UOC of the Moscow Patriarchate.
It should be noted that prior to this, loyalty to Onufry was confirmed by representatives of the clergy of the Kherson and Rivne regions, as well as the Metropolitan of Kirovograd and Novomirgorod Joasaph (Guben). In turn, Metropolitan Pereyaslav-Khmelnitsky and Vishnevsky Alexander (Drabinko), who initially agreed to become a clergyman of Constantinople, refused his words.
Thus, Constantinople does not succeed in destroying unity in the ranks of the clergy of Ukraine located in the bosom of the Moscow Patriarchate. This is despite the bold statements of the Kiev authorities and “patriots” that more than 50% of the communities are ready to go to the church organized by Constantinople.
There is one more interesting and important fact. The Kiev Metropolitanate, which existed in the old days and was subordinate to Constantinople (even before the formation of the patriarchate in Moscow in 1589), included lands in the north and west of modern Ukraine. And the south and east of modern Ukraine, had nothing to do with the Kiev Metropolis at all.
