A meeting of the Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Nikolai Patrushev, with the Assistant to the President of the United States, Donald Trump for National Security, John Bolton, began earlier planned.

The topic of discussion at the current meeting will be topical issues of Russian-American relations, which are now experiencing one of the deepest crises in the entire history of relations between the countries.

According to American media reports, the main purpose of Bolton’s visit is to notify the Russian side of the unilateral withdrawal from the treaty on intermediate and shorter-range missiles, which was signed between the Soviet Union and the United States in December 1987 by Mikhail Gorbachev and Ronald Reagan.

US President Donald Trump announced his desire to terminate the INF Treaty a few days ago during a meeting with his supporters in Nevada. In his opinion, Russia does not fulfill the terms of the contract.

At the same time, experts, including American ones, believe that Trump is concerned not so much with the fact that Russia is not fulfilling the terms of the agreement, but with the fact that China, which is not a party to the INF Treaty, is armed with short- and medium-range missiles, while how the US cannot do this.

In addition to meeting with the Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, John Bolton is scheduled to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and President Vladimir Putin.
