Foreign Minister: Russia will not please those who wish to expel it from the Council of Europe

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov criticized those who want to exclude our country from the Council of Europe. He said that Russia does not intend to please its opponents: if “this disgrace” continues, it will leave the organization itself.

In an interview with Euronews, the Russian minister explained that Moscow joined the Council of Europe because it believed that this structure could provide a pan-European space in which law and humanitarian values reigned. However, at present, all this is undermined by illegitimate actions. So, the rights of the Russian delegation to the CE are limited. Lavrov believes that the forces behind this discrimination are well aware of what they are doing.

According to him, this is a small but "very noisy" group of states. Most in Europe are aware that this group is acting provocatively.

Lavrov suggests that the Council of Europe seriously work with these anti-Russian countries. After all, it is unacceptable that, due to the ambitions of "certain politicians," the pan-European organization should be destroyed. He expressed the hope that Europeans will have the courage to prevent this from happening.

I do not think that participation in the Council of Europe for Russia is more important than Russia's participation in the Council of Europe for European countries

- added the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

It should be recalled that in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Russia was stripped of its voting rights in 2014. This was done under the pretext of the annexation of Crimea to Russia. Two times after that, the PACE discussed the issue of restoring the rights of Russia, but to no avail. As a result, Moscow decided to suspend the payment of cash contributions to the Council of Europe. Now the general secretary of this organization, Turbtern Jagland, threatens Russia with exclusion in July next year.
