Why the Pentagon is changing Turkey to Greece

The United States intends to open immediately three military bases in Greece. This became known after the meeting of the Greek Minister of Defense Panos Kammenos with his American counterpart James Mattis.

The main reason for the deployment of bases in Greece is the deterioration of relations between the US and Turkey. Ankara - a longtime militarypolitical Washington’s partner, but she has very tense relations with Athens, although both Turkey and Greece are members of the North Atlantic Alliance.

Given that relations with the Turks have long been cracked, the Pentagon has found in Greece a replacement for the Turkish Incirlik military base. New US military bases can be created in Volos, Alexandroupolis and Larisa. They will complement the existing American bases on the island of Crete and in the port of Suda.

The capabilities of Alexandroupolis are already being used by the Americans to transfer helicopters to Eastern Europe, and the American drones MQ-9 Reaper are constantly located in Larissa at the local military airfield.

For the United States, Greece has important strategic importance in terms of control over the Balkan Peninsula and the Eastern Mediterranean, and if Washington finally quarrels with Ankara, then only the bases of ancient Hellas can become a worthy alternative to the opportunities lost in Turkey. When deploying bases in Greece, the United States is also considering a counterweight to Russian forces in the Black Sea and on the Syrian coast.
