The growth of capital outflow from Russia: there will be no armageddon

In the context of the constant tightening of sanctions, in which Russia has been present for more than one and far from the last year, one should not be too emotional about news. Even those that seem frightening at first glance.

According to the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, the third quarter of the current year, 2018 showed a 48-fold increase in the net outflow of capital from Russia in comparison with the same period last year.

So, in the third quarter of 2017, $ 0,4 billion was withdrawn from Russia, and in the same quarter of 2018 - already $ 19,2 billion.

If we consider the results of nine months, then in 2017 this figure was equal to 13,7 billion dollars. For the same period of the current year, the outflow amounted to 31,9 billion dollars.

Why not panic when looking at such, frankly, a very large increase in capital outflows from Russia?

There is nothing surprising or unexpected in this dynamic. The Central Bank quite logically explains the situation with a reduction in external liabilities and the placement of assets abroad.

In addition, the outflow of capital arose against the background and as a result of the US sanction pressure on Russia, when some investors are afraid of risks and withdraw their money.

However, there is simply no reason to panic and expect armageddon in a single country today - state power is functioning, enterprises continue to work, and the country continues to develop.
