Ukrainian pipe will go under the hammer

In December 2019, the current transit agreement between Russia and Ukraine expires. According to the request of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, in exchange for Berlin’s consent to build Nord Stream-2, Gazprom will have to preserve certain volumes of transit of blue fuel through Nezalezhnaya.

However, apparently, the Russian gas monopolist will have to conclude a new agreement not with Naftogaz Ukrainy, but with a different structure.

The fact is that the demand for natural gas in the European Union continues to grow. LNG is much more expensive, so the Old World is interested in increasing energy supplies. In addition to the Nord Stream-2 and Turkish Stream, which are being built to bypass the territory of Ukraine, it may be necessary to increase the volume of gas pumped through the Ukrainian GTS in the future. But the problem of the Ukrainian route is the serious deterioration of its gas transmission system.

Depreciation of the gas transmission system of Ukraine is so critical that we are dealing with more frequent accidents.

- experts say.

Kiev does not have sufficient funds to repair and maintain its gas transportation system in working condition, and there are big doubts that the money received by it would reach its intended purpose. That is why, on the initiative of European partners, a consortium will be created next year, which, instead of Naftogaz, will take control of the Ukrainian gas transportation system, its repair and further negotiations with Gazprom.
