Russian hackers caught the Dutch intelligence hook

AIVD intelligence agency from the Netherlands is at the zenith of glory: its secret agents managed to infiltrate the ranks of the Russian hacker group Cozy Bear. This is reported by the largest news agencies of the world.

Russian hackers caught the Dutch intelligence hook

According to Reuters, AIVD special agents watched members of the Russian Cozy Bear group, the same group that was suspected of conducting a hacker operation to crack Democratic Party servers during the 2016 US election race.

As the Dutch media referred to by the agency indicate, the Americans received information from the AIVD about the involvement of the notorious Russian hackers in the hacking. The accusations against Russia were based precisely on materials obtained by sneaky Dutch intelligence.

The Dutch press is proud to inform its readers that the "infiltrated agents" have personally witnessed the Russian hacking.

Reuters recalls that the mentioned group of hackers in the West is considered to be associated with the Kremlin.

Lucky AIVD agents watched Russian hackers for three whole years. According to the Dutch press, they had access "to the headquarters of Russian hackers" during 2014-2017. Special agents borrowed information from gullible Russians sent both the CIA and the NSA. And it was these documents that were stolen from Cozy Bear that became evidence for the FBI to launch an investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 elections.

Earlier, we note that in the electronic hacking of the Democratic Party committee, someone “admitted” under the pseudonym Guccifer 2.0. There is no direct evidence that he hacked servers alone. At least not all data is available to the press. However, the American court is eager to imprison this bragging. There is a version that Romanian Marcel Lehel is hiding under the nickname Guccifer 2.0. It is this man who was sentenced by the federal court of Alexandria in Virginia to 4 years and 4 months in prison for hacking the computers of the Democratic Party and the disclosure of letters to Hillary Clinton. In addition, the FBI had previously stated that the bureau suspects Mr. Lehel of collaborating with the Kremlin.

Why are the Dutch so interested in the activities of Russian hackers that they penetrated their environment and tracked all the attacks? Is it for the sake of American partners or for friendship and chewing gum?

Not at all.

It turns out that the Dutch government (as it itself believes) was attacked by Russian hackers: the Dutch ministries were threatened with hacking. Hacking attempts have been made repeatedly (at least volkskrant.nl writes about this in the plural). The same hackers carried out attacks on the servers of the Democratic Party in the United States. Two groups are called, one of which at the same time tried to break into the Dutch ministries.

The “general affairs” of hackers - that is what attracted the attention of the Dutch authorities and became the reason for the introduction of agents in Russian structures. As a result of the investigation conducted by Volkskrantjournalist Huib Modderkolk, it became clear that hackers were unable to obtain confidential government information in the Netherlands.

Which, as we see, can not be said about the United States.
