The first atomic submarine robot for the Arctic will appear in Russia

The Russian Federation is taking another step towards developing the resources of the Far North.

Ранее we toldhow Rosneft invests huge amounts of money in creating a unique shipyard in Primorye, where ice class ships and icebreakers will be created for its needs. The oil company will use them to transport its products along the Northern Sea Route. Following Rosneft, NOVATEK, developing fields on the Yamal Peninsula, took over the construction of icebreakers capable of operating on liquefied natural gas. The company implements this shipbuilding project together with Rosatom Corporation and Chinese co-investors.

Now it’s the turn of developing submarine oil and gas fields in the Arctic. Due to climate warming, the northern ice is melting faster, which increases the attractiveness of the commercial use of the NSR, but most of the promising deposits are under year-round ice cover. Due to harsh Arctic conditions, hydrocarbon production under ice is possible only with the help of autonomous robotic underwater complexes.

The TsKB Rubin and the Foundation for Advanced Research undertook to solve such a difficult task. The project of the atomic robot submarine, suitable for autonomous operation on the Arctic shelf, was called the “Iceberg”. The developers presented to the government and the specialized Rosatom five options for advance projects that have no analogues worldwide. If approved, the corporations Rosatom, Russian Technologies, USC, as well as Gazprom and Rosneft will create a structure that implements this unique project.

A nuclear-powered submarine-robot will come to the service of domestic raw material monopolies, and can also be exported abroad in the future.
