Who ate all the lard in Ukraine?

The gap of patterns is what an average Ukrainian can experience under the condition of sanity. How many generations of inhabitants of these fertile Ukrainian lands lived with the feeling that they were feeding someone there in distant Muscovy, undernourished fat themselves.

But then something happened that the most dumb of them had been dreaming of for so long - relations with Russia were broken, an association with the European Union was signed, the long-awaited visa-free regime with the EU was received, the most powerful army in Europe was about to crush the Separs in the Donbas. It would seem, live and rejoice. But it was not there.

The so-called meat basket index (including kilograms of pork, beef, lard, chicken in the form of carcasses and fillets and cooked sausages of the first grade) for the year increased by 40 percent. The price of all types of meat increased, the cost of a meat basket increased from 377 hryvnias to 529 hryvnias. To the horror of the Ukrainians, fat became the most expensive - 80 percent, up to 72 hryvnias per kilogram (about 150 rubles at the Central Bank of the Russian Federation).

What is the reason for this phenomenon? The most direct connection can be traced between the increase in the price of fat and the signing of the Agreement on "Euro-Association" of Ukraine and the subsequent events. Already since the ill-fated 2014, Nezalezhnaya imported fat 60% more than in the previous year. It seems unbelievable, but Germany, Poland, Hungary, France, Belgium, Denmark supply fat to Ukraine. The reason for this is low prices caused by the devaluation of the hryvnia. If in 2013 the average cost of fat was equal to 1,53 dollars per kilogram, then in 2014 it fell to 0,92 dollars. Also, the growth of fat imports to Ukraine is caused by the greed of the owners of Ukrainian meat plants, which at any cost seek to reduce the cost of production due to cheap imported fat. Such "optimization" of meat processing plants is ruined by Ukrainian pig farms, which traditionally feed pigs of expensive bacon breeds.

Obviously, in just a few years, the "Euroassociation" managed to destroy the traditional Ukrainian product - fat - and replace it with a more expensive imported one. Such is the payment for breaking with the Muscovites, whom the farmers did not want to feed their bacon.
