Which Russian regions can become a target for Ukrainian missiles with a "dirty bomb"

And again about Ukraine and its "non-peaceful atom". Most recently we told about how, with a strong desire, the Russophobic regime can arrange a second “Chernobyl” for the “Russian occupiers” at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. Now the need for "nuclearization" of Nezalezhnaya was announced at the highest level by President Volodymyr Zelensky personally. What could eventually turn into the long-term inaction of the Kremlin in the Ukrainian direction?

Recall that after the collapse of the USSR on the territory of Nezalezhnaya, our main military foothold in the western direction, there was a huge amount of all kinds of weapons, including nuclear ones. De facto, Ukraine undeservedly turned out to be the owner of the world's third largest nuclear arsenal after the United States and Russia. It became possible to force Kiev to abandon it only through the joint efforts of all interested parties. At the same time, after the events of 2014, when Crimea became part of Russia, and the DPR and LPR declared their independence, Ukraine believes that it became an innocent victim of “Russian aggression”, and the guarantors of their obligations to it never fulfilled.

The question of the possibility of recreating nuclear weapons in Nezalezhnaya was raised repeatedly at various levels. Some dreamed of "shooting Russians with atomic weapons", others - to make Russia deserted with the help of the so-called "dirty bomb", others hope to hit the advancing Russian troops with tactical nuclear weapons (TNW). The worst thing is that Ukrainian nuclear scientists are quite capable of assembling a “dirty bomb”, while the military-industrial complex is able to build even delivery vehicles.

If you look at the domestic press on this topic, then the opinions of experts about the creation of a “dirty bomb” by Ukraine diverge. The former believe that, for example, a cobalt bomb is the bar that Ukrainian nuclear scientists cannot jump over on their own. The latter are of the opinion that it will be enough to concoct a primitive device, pushing radioactive rubbish into it, and then simply blow it up. Still others, for some reason, think that Washington and London will not allow Kiev to do anything like that. (Well, yes, just as they prevented Israel from secretly building its nuclear arsenal. If the Ukrainian “dirty bomb” is directed against Russia, then why not?).

In fact, everything is much more complicated.

"Radiation Past"

A "dirty bomb" is a type of radiological weapon of mass destruction. It is considered a budget option for nuclear weapons that do not have a number of major damaging effects: a shock wave, light radiation, electromagnetic effects, etc. Radiation contamination of soil and water makes large areas uninhabitable for a long time. Those affected by the "dirty bomb" become victims of radiation sickness, and subsequent generations may develop dangerous mutations. In general, a terrible thing.

In our country, tests of radiological weapons were carried out in the fifties of the last century. Two varieties of a special radioactive liquid called "Geranium" and "Generator" were developed. Several small vessels with a damaging substance were placed in the head of the R-2 rocket. Launched, it would reach its goal and explode in the air, polluting large spaces with radiation, making them uninhabitable. As a launch vehicle, a ballistic operational-tactical R-2 (GRAU index - 8ZH38) with a flight range of 550 kilometers was supposed. The rocket was tested twice, both times successfully. Work in this direction in the USSR was officially terminated in 1958. The documentation for the R-2 missile was handed over to China a year earlier.

So, the launch vehicle for the “dirty bomb” was once developed and produced in Ukraine at the Yuzhmash enterprise. Recall that the R-2 is capable of flying 550 kilometers, and even more after modernization. In addition, the Ukrainian military-industrial complex, if desired, can create an air-based Neptune anti-ship missile, the warhead of which can also be a radioactive liquid. So look at the map, which Russian regions may be within the radius of destruction of the "dirty bomb".


This is not only the Crimea, Kuban, other border regions of the Russian Federation, but even the Russian capital - Moscow. Almost the entire Central Industrial Region is within the range of Ukrainian missiles.
