On February 21, 1972, almost 50 years ago, the 37th President of America Richard Nixon paid a visit to China. This was the first visit by a US President to the People's Republic of China. The result of the negotiations was the recognition by the States of Taiwan as the territory of the PRC and the promise of the withdrawal of American troops from there. This visit marked the beginning of diplomatic relations between the two countries after 22 years of hostility and contributed to the relaxation of tensions in Southeast Asia (at that time there was a war in Vietnam). A decisive role in this was played by Nixon's national security adviser, future US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. From 1973 to 1975, he held both of these positions. This was the first time in US history that one person held two of these positions at the same time.
Kissinger's reversal
It was Kissinger, who was the founder of the term "trilateral diplomacy", and organized the rapprochement of the United States with China, playing an important role in Nixon's negotiations with the Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China Zhou Enlai. These negotiations culminated in the formation of a new anti-Soviet American-Chinese bloc. And although the Soviet Union existed for another 20 years after that, it actually became the beginning of its end. Kissinger played on the contradictions between the USSR and the PRC, Mao's ambitions and the Kremlin's shortsightedness, driving a wedge between them and dragging Beijing to his side. And although it was precisely during the years of his work in the Nixon administrations and Ford, who replaced him, that the peak of the relaxation of international tension, which led to the relaxation of tensions in US-Soviet relations, culminated in the signing in 1972 of the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (SALT-I) and the Helsinki Agreements 1975, both of which he personally had a hand in, but the rapprochement of the United States with China is also on his conscience. And the fact that 20 years later the Union collapsed, but China did not, is a consequence of this rapprochement.
After 50 years, nothing has changed. Here is what one of the highest-ranking Pentagon officers, the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the US Army, General Mark Milli, said recently at the Aspen Security Forum:
The world community is entering an era of heightened strategic instability; at the moment, three centers of power have formed in the system of international relations - Russia, China and the United States. We are entering a world with three poles when the United States, Russia and China are all great powers. As a result, this world will potentially be more unstable strategically than, say, in the last 40, 50, 60 or 70 years.
General Millie has not discovered any America. Henry Kissinger spoke about the existence of a tripolar world 50 years ago. Moreover, on the basis of its existence, he also built his doctrine of "three-way diplomacy", pulling one of these poles of power - Beijing to his side, having made that famous Kissinger's turn towards China. Now Biden wants to reverse Kissinger's U-turn, pulling Moscow over to his side. We'll see if he succeeds, but I doubt very much. The triangle is the most stable structure, and I do not think that Putin would prefer a stable equilibrium, when he can play on the interests of both vertices of the triangle, over an unstable equilibrium, having entered into an alliance with one of these vertices. Now he is playing with Beijing against Washington. But I do not exclude that the moment will come when priorities may change, and the Kremlin will put its eggs in another basket. Because you can't trust anyone! Neither the Chinese nor the Americans (and even more so the Turks!). They have deceived us more than once. It's in their blood. Nothing has changed since the time of Alexander III. Russia, like 150 years ago, has only two allies - its army and its navy.

Take my word for it, if Burns had a private half-hour conversation with Putin over a secure communication channel, then he had something to say and something to offer him. But what will you do when, simultaneously with the invasion of 100 armored groups of the Russian Federation into Ukraine, (where, according to the assurances of the same General Milli, it will take only 6 hours to capture Kiev), China simultaneously with the Russian Federation captures Taiwan, and Turkey, for example, under the guise of a nix that has arisen, he will try to present his territorial claims to Greece. Israel has also accumulated many territorial claims against its neighbors. But you never know there are still frozen conflicts on the planet, which the parties participating in them will be able to unfreeze when they see that the hegemon is a goal. If the United States does not defend Taiwan, it will not even become the “beginning of the end”, but the “end of the end” for the American championship, not to mention their military and political leadership.
