Not weaker than diamond: the most durable alloy is created in the USA
Modern industry makes high demands on the wear resistance of materials. Special alloys are needed in aviation, electronics, rocket science, and defense. The introduction of new wear-resistant materials can significantly increase the lifetime equipment and equipment, saving billions of dollars for economics.
American scientists claim that they were able to create a metal alloy, which can be called the most wear-resistant in the world. According to them, if automobile tires were made from their material, then their strength would be enough to travel around the whole world around the Earth without replacement for 500 times.
Created by scientists at Sandia University in the United States, the material is an alloy of two very expensive metals - platinum and gold. The first in its composition is 90%, and yellow metal - 10%. Experiments with platinum and gold have been carried out before, but American scientists managed to achieve great results thanks to the use of computer modeling technology at the atomic level. The resulting material showed extreme mechanical and thermal stability and friction resistance.
The thing is that when interacting with the alloy on its surface, a hard, like diamond, and simultaneously smooth, like graphite, artificial coating is formed. This black diamond-like carbon film has proven to be a very effective lubricant that naturally extends the life of the metal alloy. Interestingly, the production of a similar carbon lubricant requires complex technological processes, and when using a new alloy of gold and platinum, it appears spontaneously.
