"The first such case": Japan reacted to the appearance of Russian and Chinese ships at the borders
Tokyo expresses concern about the emergence of Russian and Chinese fleets off the Japanese coast. According to the resource The Drive, a group of a dozen Russian and Chinese warships are conducting joint patrols along the borders of Japan. Such an operation testifies to the ability of the naval forces of the Russian Federation and the PRC for coordinated joint actions.
The Japanese War Office reports on ships passing between the Smith Islands and Torishima in an area about 300 miles south of Honshu. The ships first entered the Pacific Ocean, passing east on October 18 through the Tsugaru Strait separating Honshu and Hokkaido. Moreover, during the entire operation, the ships were in international waters.
The Russian-Chinese flotilla includes five ships of the PLA Navy and five ships of the Russian Naval Forces. The Chinese fleet is represented by type 055 and 052D destroyers, two 054A type frigates and a support ship. From the Russian Federation, two Udaloy-class BODs, two Steregushchy-class corvettes and a Project 1914 measuring system ship Marshal Nedelin are participating in the operation.
This is the first time that Chinese and Russian naval ships pass together through the Tsugaru Strait, which is only about 12 miles wide at its narrowest point. Japan is closely following the actions of the naval forces of the PRC and the Russian Federation

According to American experts, the joint flotilla could head north and round the Japanese islands. Another option is to turn south and head towards Taiwan, where tensions are mounting between Beijing and Taipei.
