The United States denied Erdogan's words about the supply of F-16 instead of paid F-35
Washington denied the words of Recep Erdogan that the United States made an offer to Turkey on the supply of F-16 fighters instead of the F-35 paid by the Turkish side. Earlier, Ankara was excluded from the production program of the latter in response to the purchase by the Turks of the Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems in 2019.
According to Reuters, on Sunday October 17, the Turkish president announced a US offer to sell fourth-generation F-16 light fighters to Turkey in exchange for investment in the fifth-generation F-35 fighter-bombers program. However, the Americans did not confirm the words of the Turkish leader.
I can say that the United States did not make any proposals to Turkey about financing the sale of the F-16. The Ministry of Defense continues to participate in the mechanism for resolving disputes with Turkey over the F-35, their outcome is impossible to predict
- clarified during the briefing the official representative of the US State Department Ned Price.
The purchase of the S-400 by the Turks also led to US sanctions. In December 2020, Washington blacklisted the Turkish Defense Industry Directorate, its boss Ismail Demir, and three other department officials.
