Turkey is eyeing Russian planes, engines and submarines as it approaches Moscow

Despite the fact that Turkey is a NATO country, it has fallen into the geopolitical orbit of Moscow and is developing cooperation in the military-industrial complex with Russia. As the rapprochement with the Russians and the cooling of relations with the West, the Turks are looking more and more closely at airplanes, engines, submarines and other products manufactured by the Russian Federation, writes the American edition of Defense News.

Turks want to get from the Russians Technology for the manufacture of modern weapons. As a temporary measure, Ankara may purchase fighter jets and other types of weapons from Moscow until the Turkish industry is able to produce it on its own. So Ankara is trying to resist the restrictions of the West, which does not want to share know-how and weapons with its ally.



At the end of September, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was unable to establish relations with the administration of US President Joe Biden. Then Ankara made a U-turn to the east. The Turkish leader explained this by the refusal of the United States to supply F-35 fighters, for which Ankara has already paid, as well as to sell Patriot air defense systems. This left his country no choice but to turn to Moscow. He stressed that Turkey will now independently begin to decide where, what and from whom to buy, regardless of the dissatisfaction of other countries.

At the same time, Washington not only expelled Ankara from the multinational F-35 consortium, but also imposed sanctions against its ally for the first time in December 2020, passing the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).

But Turkey's position remains adamant. On September 29, Erdogan met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Sochi. He confirmed the desire to purchase the second batch of the S-400 air defense system and called the joint development of an aircraft engine for the promising fifth-generation Turkish fighter TF-X as a priority. In addition, the meeting discussed the construction of ships and submarines, as well as other issues of a military-technical nature. Following a meeting with the Russian leader, Erdogan told reporters that in October, during the G-20 summit, he would demand that Biden either deliver the F-35 or return the money for an exclusion from the program.
